Abandoned Stadiums and Crumbling Arenas Around the World

Rio Olympic Games

Although the Olympics Games only took place in Rio in 2016, once the games were over, many of the newly-built venues were left to rot. Just six months after the Games, signs of neglect and decay were already evident. Hosting the Olympics is a massive economic burden to a country, especially if many new venues need to be built. The Rio Games marked the first time the international competition had taken place in Latin America in 40 years, so the country wanted to ensure they matched up to other Olympic host nations. Nowadays, the Olympic Village is a ghost town, and many venues are sliding into disrepair.
